Fans at Rock Concerts Trade Lighters for Camera Phones

Att18554_1I've been to a couple great arena rock shows over the past few weeks - Rolling Stones and Coldplay. At last night's Coldplay show, I looked around at the thousands of fans in the stadium and instead of seeing flickering lighters, I saw thousands of glowing blue lights. A wall of mini-screens capturing images and sounds from the concert broadcast live to friends and family through their cell phones - a veritable tidal wave of consumer generated media. At one point during the Coldplay show, they even flashed the words "Get Your Cameras Ready" on the mega-screen behind the stage.

The same was true of the Rolling Stones concert from a few weeks back.New_image_2

Even at the shows, I couldn't take my marketing hat off completely.Chris_ben_1 I noticed dozens of Oxfam volunteers at the Coldplay show courting donations and petition signatures from fans in the Target Center lobby. With a captive audience, with cell phones in hand, I couldn't help but wonder why Coldplay and Oxfam didn't flash a premium SMS number across the screen or video marquee with a call to action for fans to support the "Make Trade Fair" campaign. What a great opportunity to leverage the passion of the moment for a cause.

This is so ironic that you mention this phenomenon in your blog. I recently took my 14 year old daughter and her friends to "The Used" concert and found myself staring in amazement as everyone held up their cell phones during the first love ballad. It had been a long time since I was at a rock concert and many things seemed different to me (like assigned seating and the seemingly complete lack of a giant smoke cloud. Maybe those commercials are really working). The most interesting, and somewhat disconcerting, part of the entire affair was how my daughter and her friends (all of which were attending their first rock concert), without missing a beat, pulled out their cell phones and proudly raised them above their heads.

After the show, I tried to explain the irony to the girls and was meank stares. Neither did they seem to care about what we used to do when we were kids, nor did they seem to find the technological progression to be as amazing as I did. I suppose it was the same when my grandparents expressed their amazement with the Bic lighter.

Man I feel old...
